Queens Gardens, St Andrews
Andrew Black Design was commissioned to undertake extensive internal alterations and spatial reconfiguration of a Grade C listed townhouse dating from circa 1859–1869, located on historic Queens Gardens within the St Andrews Conservation Area.
Central to the proposal was the complete refurbishment of the attic floor, including the introduction of two dormers to the street elevation. These additions were conceived to sit comfortably within the established architectural rhythm of the terrace, complementing both the character of the individual property and the wider streetscape.
The upgraded attic level was brought in line with modern thermal performance standards. New dormer windows minimise heat loss, while conservation rooflights were introduced on the north elevation to further enhance natural light and energy efficiency without compromising the building’s historic fabric.
At ground floor level, the layout was reconfigured to create a generous kitchen and dining space spanning the full width of the house, allowing natural light to penetrate deeper into the plan.
A new staircase was fitted and across the project, a meticulous approach was taken to the restoration of historic elements: original features were either retained, carefully repaired, or authentically replicated where necessary.
The result is a refined refurbishment that restores the townhouse’s original character while equipping it for modern life.
