The building includes offices for permanent staff, stores including secure vehicle and weapons stores, as well as changing facilities and recreational spaces, and provides a headquarters and training base for the reservists.

The design phase of this project was preceded by a systematic investment appraisal delivered by Andrew Black Design in conjunction with Whole Life Consultants, focusing on calculation of whole life cost and current net asset values of the options over a 30-year investment horizon to establish the option most likely to deliver value for money over the long term.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) mandates that new building are net zero carbon in use and achieve an ‘Excellent’ rating using the MOD’s Defence Related Environmental Assessment Method (DREAM), assessing the sustainability of building projects at feasibility, design, construction and operation stages. Andrew Black Design were lead assessors for the first three stages and collaborated with ecologists, acousticians, service engineers (low and zero carbon technologies), flood risk assessors, specialist manufacturers and suppliers, whole life cost consultants and many more.

We are pleased to have helped deliver a highly efficient, healthy and sustainable building with low running and maintenance costs, while providing an attractive space in which servicemen and women can work and train.
