Flass Cottage

Flass Cottage sits on the edge of Wormit across the river Tay from Dundee. The aim was to respect the original cottage by leaving the principal elevation intact, with the new works clearly defined in terms of form and material choice.

The extension sits to the side of the cottage and is recessed into the hillside and oriented to face south. Here, the use of local stone grounds the entrance level into the landscape.

The zinc clad living, kitchen and dining block sits on the stone base and is oriented on a North ‐ South axis to capture the views across to Dundee. Its form, orientation and sharp finish, differentiate it from the existing cottage.

The long living space was designed to sit apart from the cottage, connected at first-floor level by a glazed sunroom. This glass link block, its recessed stone base as well as its green roof are designed to reduce the impact on the existing cottage while providing a central circulation and orientation space for the building.

The cottage is to have an open plan layout creating free-flowing circulation along the kitchen and dining area, and through to the new North‐facing sunroom.
