Nursery Cottage

This attractive cottage benefits from a large garden with open fields to the East but was in need of renovation. The brief involved a considerable expansion of the property from two, to four bedrooms. The aim was to respect the original cottage by leaving the principal elevation intact, with the new works clearly defined in terms of form and material choice. The long barn extension sits behind the cottage and is separated by a glass linking corridor which brings light deep into the plan as well as expressing the divide between old and new.

The cottage has an open plan layout creating free-flowing circulation along the kitchen and dining area, and through to the new South-facing sunroom extension. The sunroom looks out to the West and opens onto a new deck which faces the front garden. In contrast, the north end of the cottage features a snug with its own wood burning stove for a more enclosed, private space.

A stairwell void sits opposite the dining room and creates a strong connection to the surrounding landscape with clear views from the garden to the West, through the cottage, new extension and out over the fields to the East.
